BLOOD PLASMA FRACTIONATION
In most countries, donated blood is centrifuged, separating plasma from red cells, white cells and platelets. The plasma can then be processed (fractionated) to produce albumin, immune globulins, clotting factors and other proteins for therapeutic use. In countries without capacity to process plasma into its proteins, the plasma is often discarded, forcing people to buy the proteins from global suppliers at high prices, or not having life saving medicines available.
